A person who advocates political independence for a country is a definition of a Nationalist. British Nationalists have decided to take the United Kingdom out of Europe so now we are all British whether we identify with that epithet or not. If you call yourself a Welsh Nationalist the cooing and clucking starts " You're racist then?" "No luuuurrve, that's UKIP". That doesn't appear to happen to Sturgeon and Salmon and the massed ranks of the SNP in the Houses of Parliament. Is this perhaps because they have embraced the word? Because Wales or parts of Wales namely the ones colonised by the Industrial Revolution historically identify with Britain, then anything that marks you out as a 'Welshy' will be used against you. You are a minority in your own country if you believe that that country should be politically independent. This doesn't work against the Scots or the Brits so why does it work against the Welsh? Being Pro Wales & Pro the Welsh Language does not make you against anything else unless you see the British State as the cause of the stagnation of the nation. We can expect British this and British that during the tenancy of the next Prime Minister and the propaganda will be eagerly pushed out by the journos and administrators in Central Square, Cardiff. One reason perhaps that we do not have such a strong sense of National Identity is that we do not have a shared history like the Scots. Do the Scots refer to the Highlanders as Crofters as South Wales refers to North Wales dismissively as Gogs?
We saw an outpouring of Patriotism with the Welsh National Football team in the past month but this Patriotism will not translate into Nationalism because the British Welsh still consider the N word to be a 'Naughty' word but if the Welsh both North and South were to adopt the word as the Scots have done, then perhaps, just perhaps we will see a stronger, more prosperous, more self assured Wales, A Nation not a Poxy Principality ....but I won't hold my breath.
